What is Aquaculture ?
As the name says, it combines water and cultivation, especially for human consumption, is the regulated method of cultivating aquatic species. It's a term similar to agriculture, but instead of plants or animals, with fish. Fish farming is often referred to as aquaculture. It is possible that the seafood you find at your local grocery store is branded as farmed fish. In coastal ocean waters, freshwater ponds and rivers, and even on land in tanks, aquaculture can happen all over the world.
The mechanism being Aquaculture
The methods of aquaculture’s farm-to-table process can differ from species to species. Generally, there are four stages of the production chain, starting in hatcheries and ending at the seafood counter in your grocery store.
Both of these phases will differ in terms of their environmental effects and the quality and protection of the seafood they produce, which is why the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program is administered by the Global Aquaculture Alliance. Fish farms have had difficulties in the past with regard to these four aspects of aquaculture, and BAP aims to boost the worldwide fish farming industry. This is the only certification program that covers every step of the supply chain. You can be sure your seafood was farmed responsibly if it has the BAP logo on it!
In the production chain of aquaculture, the first stage is the hatchery. This is where fish breeding, egg hatching and fish rearing in the early stages of life occur. Once the animals are sufficiently mature, they are moved to the field, where they are grown to harvest size, using feed produced at feed mills (another aquaculture stage).
Motivation for this practice
As the overfishing of our seas and other natural resources continues to increase year after year, human beings need alternative sources of seafood to feed the ever-growing population of the earth. The days of the natural productivity of the ocean caring for the earth are unfortunately over.
For centuries, wild fish have been exploited. Some estimate that the annual capture of edible marine protein has already reached its height. The market for seafood can not naturally be supplied by the oceans (Positive Aquaculture Awareness). The method for filling the seafood supply gap is aquaculture. The solution to providing future generations with access to safe and environmentally sustainable protein choices is to farm fish safely and sustainably.
Aquaculture is not only essential, it is also a sustainable option for consumers, particularly compared to other proteins that are farmed. Seafood is extremely resource efficient compared to chicken, pork and beef, it has the highest protein retention. It also has the lowest ratio of feed conversion between the same protein forms. Aquaculture has lower emissions of greenhouse gases than other farming types.
How Aquaculture can satisfy the demand
The demand for animal protein will increase by 52 percent, with an estimated 10 billion people predicted to occupy the earth by 2050. More important than ever before are sustainable and balanced approaches to feeding the globe. In order to sustainably feed a healthy, lean protein to the rising population of the world, the role of aquaculture is of the utmost importance.
